The Americans with Disabilities Act and Universal Design
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) prohibits discrimination based on disability. Because of the ADA sidewalks must have curb cuts, public buildings must be accessible by ramps, and fire alarms must contain visual cues, such as flashing lights. These changes to infrastructure remove barriers for people with disabilities, but they also make every day tasks easier for society at large. Just imagine trying to push a stroller or pull a suitcase up a long flight of stairs because the building did not have a ramp.
